stupid people

(no subject)

The new issue of EMG-Zine is successfully up. I think the bugs are mostly worked out. I hope the Fair Use article doesn't suck. Those of you that have had subscriptions in the past, you have them again until Jan 1st (except for you angels who have already renewed - you have an extra month on your subscriptions!). Please go upload an advertising banner for the rotation! We have so few right now that a) it's a great opportunity to be seen and b) the banner ad rotation is really boring. (These ads will show on archived articles, for all non-subscribers.)

I got one of THOSE emails via the comment form at Portrait Adoption:

COMMENTS: I just want to know how you can charge for something that I could get for
free elsewhere? This is crazy.

I'm carefully composing my response now. It will not contain a diatribe on common courtesy. It will NOT contain a diatribe on common courtesy. Probably they meant the question rhetorically, but I'll answer as if it were an honest request for information.

It's 12 below today, so I've got the woodstove going, and it's wonderfully warm and cozy inside. It makes me sleepy. *yawns*

Best get through my to-do list, now!

Sometimes, I HATE technology

ARGH.

So, my network problems were not quite over. One of my printers (cards, magnets and invoices) is connected via wireless and... you probably see this one coming... refused to communicate with my computer when I got fired up to get orders out.

I spent the morning troubleshooting, and did FINALLY get it working again. It was a stupid error on my end (a .0 instead of a .1 in the IP address), but oh, so very, very frustrating, and it definitely throws the schedule of my day off. No Torn World or AOF today, I suspect.

A draft...

I got an email yesterday: "I just want to know how you can charge for something that I could get for free elsewhere? This is crazy."

I've been asked many times: why do you even bother answering these letters? "You can't teach a pig to sing," one artist went so far as to say. "You are only wasting your time and annoying the pig."

Well, maybe the pig should be a little annoyed. I'm a little annoyed. In fact, I'm a little incensed. Who wouldn't be? This person has just implied that the work that I put into artwork is worth nothing, and that my sanity is questionable.*

After a few cathartic drafts of a reply that involve rude references to their mother and their upbringing in a barn, my anger is gone, and I'm left with sorrow and a little sourness. But when I write the final draft of this letter, it is with genuine hope - however slim - that this is just someone who hasn't taken the time to stop and think about what they're writing. Maybe I can be the one who gives them just a moment of pause and makes them see the value in the things they take for granted. Maybe, with a few moments of my time, I can open their eyes to an artist's point of view and save a dozen future artists the same condescension. That chance is worth a few moments. (And I'll keep a copy of it handy for the next inevitable email I get...)

*Okay, okay, so there might be a point there...
